Blog EntrySunday Sermon Preview: Mother's Day MssgMay 10, '08 4:30 AM
for everyone
Landed in MNL late last night. Met with Ferdie, Paulo, Rico and Gilbert this AM to discuss our Mother's day mssg. I don't usually wait til Sat to prep my Sunday mssg, but been too busy lately.

Here's what i'll preach at Victory-Fort at 9 & 11 tomorrow.

Honor your father and mother -- which is the first commandment with a promise -- so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.   EPH 6:2,3

HONOR is the key concept here, and the big idea is:

We honor our parents by obeying God.

Sometimes God's will and our parent's plans seem to be incompatible. What do we do then?

We will examine 3 scenes where Jesus honored his mother and obeyed his Father at the same time:
    - at the cross (John 19)
    - at the wedding (John 2)
    - at the temple (Luke 2)

Hopefully my sermon will help you answer these questions:

How did Jesus honor His mother?
How do we apply Jesus' example to our lives?
How do we honor parents who do not live honorable lives?
How do we honor parents who are dead?
How do we honor a father or mother we have never met?
How do we honor fathers and mothers who persecute us?
How do we honor our parents then their will for us conflicts with God's will?

Here's Paolo's Mother's day trailer, and here's Ferdie's sermon sneak preview.

I hope you will also address the issue of "corban" (Mark 7:11). The Pharisees declared their goods as "corban" or "dedicated to God" in order to avoid having to share them with their parent. I know that in my own life I have at times wrongly used church meetings and fellowship as excuses to avoid helping out their parents, contributing to the household, etc. My time was "corban" and I dishonored my parents in the same way that the Pharisees did.

good point, and that's part of my first point - how we are to take care of our parents when they can't take care of themselves - how we are supposed to follow the example Jesus set by including them in our lives adn ministries...

I'd love to hear this mssg Steve! We just had our 1st Mother's Day service to honour our mothers. I rented a condo party rm in Toronto and I had a friend (Susan) share her testimony of being a new mom and people were really moved. We catered Korean food and had the men serve the women and handed out bouquets of carnations to each mum....it was a lot of fun!
